It is Enough, artwork and blog by Kathleen Deyo

Ever hear, “Sit still and shut up”? Harsh words can obliterate the wisdom of the message. Sitting still in silence is the best way to discover the wisdom in the words, “I am enough.”

There is a stillness in the universe and when we step aside, we feel it.

In the stillness we find acceptance, forgiveness and healing. It is for us all.

So why isn’t dwelling in the stillness our goal every minute of everyday? My guess is that we are still human. Living a well considered life can involve suffering and exhaustion. We know things should be better and life is unfair and we feel our efforts to set a good example change nothing and go by unrewarded. Anxiety is poison that grips us and whacks us around the room until we land in pain. Pain is the illusion of emptiness that feels like a canyon of self-loathing and anger. And in our experience, we get seduced by discouragement, depression, inadequacy… and by the need for acceptance, recognition and praise. Some of it feels comfortable because it’s familiar but it’s all empty. It is a waste of time and a waste of a life. Why? It’s because people come and go and their opinions are fickle.

It’s because we can’t change anything but ourselves.

The urge to go on…to follow our hearts…to do the right thing is like a friendly arm supporting us to stand once again. We may feel numb inside but we take a shower and clean ourselves up inside and out. We start slow and organize the chaos one task at a time. It’s then that we realize the stillness was there all along but we forgot to let it guide us. And it feels so good, so deep, so real. We were so desperate with pain we forgot it’s all a useless struggle. And so we begin again.

We will all face death and we can do it with stillness and willingness. We can rehearse this each day. Not knowing what comes next is easy when we embrace the stillness. I am learning to feel grateful for this moment. Can I accept it now and not cunningly scheme for something more? The stillness, once valued, turns our minds and hearts inside out and It runs over us as acceptance and forgiveness and healing. The LOVE awaiting us in death is with us in living. The love we embrace in our daily experience is with us in death.
